I don't have a high criminal rating with any kingdom. I've also entered a mercenary contract with a kingdom after they've already declared war. I'll travel with an army then suddenly all of my relationships with the different clans within the kingdom will drop and I will no longer be in the contract, only a day after starting it sometimes.

At first, there was a penalty. A few patches in, they removed it. People wanted to be able to hop around merc'ing for different factions. I don't think it's a bad moveinitially being a merc was about as restrictive as being a vassal (as far as relations penalty for leaving faction), without the benefits.

Equipping a Standard Or Banner. To equip a Standard or Banner in Mount and Blade Bannerlord: Hold left-click and drag the Banner into your empty Banner slot. Xbox users use the A button. PlayStation users use the X button. And that’s it!
It is either a bug, or a feature (I'm not sure on either) where OFTEN, the faction leader, or their number 2 in charge (Monchug, mesui example..) can't be Immediately ransomed. You can just go to tavern and ransom everyone. But can't do it individually. They also have no ARROW, to assign them to YOUR dungeon (or push to the sell side in tavern).
A good way to do that is to take up a mercenary contract with the faction you like instead of becoming a lord directly. You'll be able to fight their enemies, increase your renown and also your relations with them. That last part is pretty important because when you do become a vassal, you'll need the support from other lords to be granted fiefs.

The most fun part of Bannerlord to me is being a mercenary and it's a very viable way to make a bunch of money. Vlandia gets the faction bonus for making even more money with mercenary contracts so most of the time I choose Vlandia because it lets you have such a good mid game before you start your own faction.

What happens if you leave a kingdom as a mercenary Bannerlord? As a mercenary, you're able to leave the faction at any time with little to no issues. Talking to the leader of the faction will allow you to break both mercenary and Vassal contracts. Leaving will negatively affect your relationship with the Lords of the faction, but if you are a Choosing to allow to contract to expire will cause you to leave the kingdom you are working for and surrender any fiefs you own back to that kingdom without suffering any relationship penalties. As far as i can tell, The game thinks merc contracts are the same as joining that faction as a lord. A bug i seriously hope gets fixed soon as it really ruins allot of the game play, having people hate you just because you left them when they ran out of wars to fight.
Step 1. Get bow Step 2. Get horse Step 3. Get good. Realistically though it’s better to just sue for peace or bribe sometimes. Or find/sneak into a town and wait there a while. Against bandits, barter with them and pay for safe passage. Against lords, try the same but they won't always accept.
Build caravans 6. join army/siege (winnable ones) and loot valuable items 7. chop off noble’s head for loot (with the mod) That’s about it. Smithing lets you turn junk weapons into 50k+ twohanders, so that's a nice way to get both a lot of money and amazing weapons.
The mod used this 'bug' to introduce Warband's mercenary contract feature, creating a valid alternative to leaving a Kingdom without a reason. The devs fixed this in an unexpected way. Instead of introducing some new mechanic(in the game's code there is an option to leave the kingdom because of lack of payment), they just made leaving a Kingdom
